Studio Integration · Green Screen / Chroma Key

Green Screen Studio Installation

A clean chroma key starts with the light, not the camera. In green screen studios we light the backdrop evenly and without shadows, light the presenter separately from it and, where needed, build the cyclorama itself. We built both the backdrop and the lighting for Bahçeşehir University, Istanbul Kültür University, Your Medya and Meta Digital Education, and lit CNBC-e’s virtual production studio with TrueLight fixtures.

Who is a green screen studio for?

A green screen makes sense for any team that wants different sets, graphics and virtual environments in a single room. The projects we build most often:

  • News and business channels running a virtual set (e.g. CNBC-e).
  • Communication faculties where students learn virtual production hands-on (BAU, İKÜ).
  • Organisations producing e-learning and online course content (Meta Digital Education).
  • Media companies that want a production space inside an office building (Your Medya).

Fixed cyclorama or curtain?

There are two basic routes: a fixed cyclorama with a seamless, curved surface, or a fabric curtain hung from a rail. The right choice depends on whether the room is a permanent green screen, whether the floor shows in shot, and whether the space has to serve other purposes too.

Lighting the backdrop evenly

For a clean key the backdrop must be one flat tone with no shadows and no hot spots. That is why we plan and control the backdrop light separately from the presenter light. Wide soft panels, or linear fixtures designed for sets and backdrops, are used to wash the surface evenly.

Backdrop brightness is checked on the camera’s waveform monitor: a surface that falls off in the corners or peaks in the middle comes back as dirty edges in the key. Every fixture must also run at the same colour temperature and flicker-free on camera.

Presenter light and green spill

A green backdrop bounces light back onto the presenter’s hair, shoulders and glasses. The most effective fix is distance from the backdrop plus a back light that separates the hair and shoulder line. That is why depth often matters as much as width in a green screen room.

Wardrobe matters too: green tones, very shiny or finely striped fabrics make keying harder. We agree these rules with your team during the survey.

Green screen under a low ceiling

A low ceiling brings fixtures closer to the frame and creates hot spots above the presenter. At Istanbul Kültür University, in a space with a 2.85 m ceiling, we used slim, wide-angle TrueLight fixtures to keep headroom, and delivered the cyclorama construction and lighting turnkey.

Virtual sets and camera tracking

Virtual set software and camera tracking are a separate specialist layer. We coordinate with the provider you choose and prepare the backdrop and lighting for the requirements of that software and those cameras. We define the scope together during the survey.

What we measure when planning

Instead of a generic fixture-count table, we derive the lighting plan from the measurements below. Even rooms of the same size end up with different plans because framing and use differ.

How we work

  1. /01

    Survey and measurements

We assess the space, ceiling, shots and use case on site.

  2. /02

    Backdrop and lighting plan

We decide between cyclorama and curtain and lay out backdrop and presenter light.

  3. /03

    Construction and installation

If needed we build the cyclorama, then install the lights and control.

  4. /04

    Key test and training

We test with your own camera and train your team.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How big does a green screen room need to be?

There is no single minimum. Frame width, presenter-to-backdrop distance and the space the camera needs all count. To reduce green spill, depth often matters as much as width; we take these measurements together during the survey.

Can you build a green screen studio under a low ceiling?

Yes. We built the Istanbul Kültür University green screen studio under a 2.85 m ceiling using slim, wide-angle TrueLight fixtures. During the survey we measure the ceiling and camera angles and choose suitable fixtures.

Do you build the cyclorama as well?

Yes. For Bahçeşehir University, Istanbul Kültür University, Your Medya and Meta Digital Education we delivered the cyclorama construction and the lighting turnkey.

Green or blue backdrop?

Green is the most common choice for virtual sets. Wardrobe, props and the keyer software can make blue the better option, so we recommend deciding the colour together with the software.

How much does a green screen studio cost?

The cost depends on the backdrop type (cyclorama or curtain), room size, number of lights and control infrastructure. After a free survey we prepare a quote for your needs. See our studio build cost guide for the details.
